(Hoog)begaafde kinderen kunnen het idee ontwikkelen dat als je slim bent alles vanzelf moet gaan. Als je ergens moeite voor moet doen, als je fouten maakt, dan ben je dus niet slim. Zij zijn in hun jonge leventje gewend dat ze alles heel snel onder de knie kregen. Iets wat niet gelijk lukt, dat kunnen ze blijkbaar niet. Als ik hierover praat met jongeren/ kinderen dan is de Leerkuil van het Talentenlab een handig hulpmiddel. Het maakt heel inzichtelijk hoe het denken over leren werkt en wat er gebeurt als je een moeilijke taak krijgt. Als kinderen de beginnen met de taak en het wordt moeilijk, dan komen ze in een leerkuil en deze kinderen blokkeren wanneer ze niet meer verder kunnen. Het ontbreekt ze dan aan mogelijkheden om door deze blokkade heen te breken en te gaan léren. Want als je over de kuil heen kunt springen dan leer je niet!
Het is daarom heel belangrijk dat het kind de beschikking krijgt over de gereedschappen die in het onderste vlak genoemd staan. In mijn praktijk richt ik mee daar ook op. Kun je hulp vragen? En aan wie dan? Hoe kijk je aan tegen fouten maken? Zie je jezelf als dom als je een fout maakt of zie je het als een kans om er iets van te leren? Hoe is het met je inzet? Is die echt groot genoeg? Of maak je je ergens vanaf. En weet je eigenlijk wel hoe je moeilijke taken kunt aanpakken? Ken je ook verschillende oplossingen voor een probleem? Kun je een alternatief bedenken? Als blijkt dat deze gereedschappen ontbreken is het belangrijk daar mee aan de slag te gaan.
